Last Mow of the Season: Get the Height Right

Learn how to plan the final mow of the season in Omaha, including grass height, leaf cover, and changing fall weather.

All summer, the rule is simple: keep it tall. Taller grass shades the soil, holds moisture, and crowds out weeds. Then fall arrives and the rule flips — at least on our mowing routes: the final cut goes a notch shorter than summer height. Not scalped. Here's why the flip matters. What long grass does all winter Grass left tall going into dormancy doesn't just sit there.

It flops over under the first snow, mats down, and traps moisture against itself for four months. Matted, wet turf coming out of winter is thin, patchy, and slow to green up — and it gives every spring problem a head start. A shorter final cut lets the lawn go dormant tidy and come out of it breathing. Think of it as tucking the lawn in instead of throwing a blanket over its face.

When to do it When the grass stops growing — in Omaha, usually late October into November. You'll know: the mower starts coming back with an empty bag and the lawn looks the same week after week. That's the signal for the final cut. We drop the height a touch for that one, and you're done until spring. One last mow, then you can ignore the mower until April like everyone else.

The part people get wrong Two mistakes, opposite directions. Some people scalp it to the dirt thinking shorter is always better — it's not; scalped turf has no reserves and greens up weak. Others skip the final mow entirely because "it's basically done growing anyway" — and spend April looking at matted straw wondering what happened. The target is the middle: neat, slightly short, done.
