Fall Perennial Cutbacks: What to Cut and What to Leave

What to cut back in an Omaha garden this fall and what can stay for winter interest. Plan a bed cleanup with Xscapes Landscaping.

Fall bed cleanup has two easy extremes: leave everything until spring, or cut every stem to the ground. Omaha gardens usually benefit from a more selective pass. The point is a tidy bed that still has something worth looking at when the lawn goes quiet.

What usually gets cut back

Spent annuals can come out. Perennial foliage that has collapsed or turned mushy after hard frosts can be cut back, especially when it is matting over nearby plants. Remove debris that could smother new growth or make spring cleanup harder. The timing depends on the plant and the weather; a date on the calendar cannot inspect a garden bed.

What can stay for winter

Ornamental grasses and sturdy seed heads can give a bed shape through winter and offer something for birds. Evergreens stay, of course. Leave healthy standing material when it still looks good and is not causing a problem. You can make another cut in spring; the shears do not come with an undo button.

Make the scope clear

Tell us which planting beds need attention and whether you want leaf removal, a final mow, or other cleanup at the same visit. Photos help us judge the amount of work, but we confirm the scope and a property-specific quote before scheduling. Bed cutbacks should be discussed explicitly instead of assumed to be part of every cleanup.

A couple of common questions

When should perennials be cut back? We look at the plant and its condition after frost rather than treating every perennial alike. Should grasses come down in fall? Many can stand through winter and be cut before new growth in spring. Tell us what is in your beds and we can discuss a sensible plan.
