Elkhorn Landscape Transformation: From Bare Grass to Rock Beds

From bare grass beneath the trees to a landscape with shape and depth

The trees were already there. The grass beneath them was thin and bare. For this Elkhorn customer, the answer wasn't a separate ring around every tree—it was one large landscape bed that brought the area together.

We reshaped the beds, added height with soil, adjusted the irrigation layout and finished the landscaping with rock and stone edging. A flagstone walkway up top completed the customer's request.

A larger bed, built around the existing trees

The starting point was the customer's vision: one connected landscaping bed beneath the trees. We measured the areas, marked the layout and flagged the sprinkler heads before removing sod from the designated spaces.

Changing the bed boundaries also meant changing the sprinkler placement. We moved the heads outside the new beds and readjusted them as part of the renovation.

More than a flat bed

Shape mattered as much as the surface finish. We brought in several tons of dirt to raise the bed areas and give them depth, then installed stone edging around both beds.

About 16 tons of rock finished the raised areas and the large bed under the trees. The curved edges gave the beds a defined boundary beside the lawn, while the rock brought the new landscape areas together.

Moving that much material through an existing yard took repeated trips back and forth. Keeping the remaining grass from getting trampled was one of the project's challenges.

A walkway that fits the new layout

The customer also wanted a walkway up top. We marked the path, set Keota buff stone edgers, laid landscaping fabric in the pathway and placed the flagstone pieces with rock between them.

The path became a supporting part of the finished landscape, alongside the renovated beds.

The finished transformation

Completed September 30–October 3, 2025, this four-day Elkhorn project turned the areas of thin, bare grass beneath the trees into one large stone-edged rock bed, with raised bed areas and a flagstone walkway up top.

The finished landscaping had the shape and depth we set out to create, and the customer was happy with the result.
